FTP - Uploading Website Files

Upload Files To Web Hosting Server

2 Create A Website What Is FTP?

FTP means File Transfer Protocol.

FTP is used to transfer or copying files over the internet between computers. Basically for file sharing on the www (world wide web). It is similar to downloading a file from the internet.

There are lots of free as well as paid FTP programs available on the market. Most of them have graphic user interfaces where you can drag and drop your files accross to web hosting server.

Microsoft™ Windows Explorer has got a FTP program built in.

2 Create A Website How Does FTP Work?

FTP works on a client (local pc) and server (remote pc) based approach. If you want to successfully transfer your files (images, web pages, videos etc.) then you will use FTP servers and FTP clients.

To move a file to another pc via FTP:

  • On your local PC you will use a FTP client eg. Filezilla
  • You will then enter the ftp web address
  • The FTP server that run on the web server will answer the request to move or transfer the files accross
  • The FTP web server will then prompt for the username and password to connect to the server
2 Create A Website Why Use FTP Programs?

If I have lots of folders and files to transfer to a web hosting server then I use a FTP program Filezilla. It is very useful and can transfer batch files in an instant from one computer to another.

Advantages of FTP programs:

  • You can rename files in GUI (graphic user inteface) live on the FTP server
  • Transfer huge batch files in one go
  • Some FTP client software allows you to edit your web pages live and then copy it back
  • FTP programs are very fast
